Ecuador

Ecuador is located in northwestern South America, with a rich history spanning thousands of years, and is also home to the world-famous Galapagos Islands.

Many indigenous cultures flourished prior to the arrival of the Incas in the late 15th century, and subsequent Spanish control for nearly three centuries exploited the land and its resources including gold and silver, while imposing their language, religion, and culture on the indigenous population.

Soon after, the Galapagos Islands were visited by Charles Darwin in 1835, and his observations of the diverse wildlife and geological formations there influenced his theory of evolution. Situated about 1,000 kilometers off the Ecuadorian coast, they gained international fame for their unique ecosystems and species, and conservation efforts have been made to preserve the islands’ delicate ecosystems.

Today, Ecuador is known for its natural beauty, including the Galapagos Islands, the Andes mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. Its diverse population, rich indigenous heritage, and vibrant arts and traditions contribute to its cultural richness.

The people and history of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands showcase a land with a fascinating past and a commitment to preserving its natural wonders for generations to come. Now is your turn to explore the vast diversity offered by one of South America’s smaller nations, with Andean Dreams.
